“Cosmetics” range from everyday hygiene products, like soaps, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste, to beauty items including perfumes and makeup.  With the increasing popularity of organic and natural cosmetics, consumers and manufacturers earnestly need authoritative organizations’ objective and professional certification for the products, whether they meet a recognized standard.  Around the world, there are a number of organizations providing certification service but using different standards.  In other words, there’s not one single standard applying to all. 

Seeing the need of one international standard for the best interests of consumers and the industry development, 5 main certifying bodies, namely ICEA (Italy), BDIH (Germany), COSMEBIO & ECOCERT (France) and SOIL ASSOCIATION (UK), came together in 2002 to cooperate to develop a single harmonized standard.  In 2010, the COSMOS-Standard was published.  Till date, totally 10 certifying organizations across Europe, Australia and Asia are authorized to certify organic and natural cosmetics to COSMOS-Standard.

COSMOS-Standard requires:

–    promoting the use of products from organic agriculture, and respecting biodiversity

–    using natural resources responsibly, and respecting the environment

–    using processing and manufacturing that are clean and respectful of human health and the environment

–    integrating and developing the concept of "Green Chemistry".
